How to Search Lyon County Court Records
The official online path is Minnesota Court Records Online Case Search, often called MCRO. Lyon County does not run a separate county court database. MCRO covers Minnesota district trial courts, including Lyon County District Court, and provides case search, document search, hearing search, and judgment search tools. The MCRO overview explains that case details, registers of actions, hearing data, money judgment details, and some public documents may be available online.
Start with the broad case search when the case number is not known. Use a document search only when a case number is available, since MCRO Document Search is built around case-number lookup. Use MCRO Hearing Search for hearing dates, parties, judicial officers, attorneys, and bar numbers. Use MCRO Judgment Search for docketed money judgments and satisfactions by debtor name.
- Open MCRO Case Search and choose the tab that matches what you know: Name, Case Number, Citation Number, or Attorney.
- For a person search, enter the last name. Add first name, middle name, date of birth, date filed, case category, and case status when those facts are known.
- Expand the location filter and select Lyon County if local results are needed. Leaving the location statewide may return cases filed in other Minnesota counties.
- Open the result and read the case details or register of actions. Check each event date, hearing type, party role, and disposition entry.
- For certified copies or documents missing from MCRO, use the Lyon County copy request process through court administration.
The MCRO FAQ is important for criminal, traffic, and petty misdemeanor records. Pending cases with no conviction do not return by defendant name in Case Search or Hearing Search. A case number, citation number, attorney name, or bar number may be needed until the case reaches a conviction or other public search stage.

MCRO has more filters than a basic name box. The case search can be broad, but a county filter and case category filter help reduce false matches, especially when a common name appears in more than one Minnesota county. Wildcards may be used after at least two characters, but the Sounds Like option cannot be combined with wildcards.

Types of Lyon County Court Records
Lyon County District Court is the local trial court of general jurisdiction. It handles civil, family, probate, juvenile, criminal, and traffic cases filed in Lyon County. That means most public court records route through one court system and its Court Administrator, even though the record types differ. The County Recorder handles marriage certificates and vital records, but divorce cases remain court records in District Court.
Common Lyon County court records include civil complaints, answers, motions, affidavits, notices, orders, judgments, settlement documents, criminal complaints or citations, bail and release entries, plea and sentencing records, family case orders, probate filings, traffic citations, and judgment records. Protective-order records and juvenile records have special limits.

- Traffic and petty records: Citations and payable offenses handled through District Court or the Court Payment Center.
- Judgment records: Docketed money judgments, satisfactions, assignments, and related filings.

Judgment Search is a separate tool because money judgments and satisfactions are indexed differently from ordinary case results.
What Lyon County Court Records Show
A public case record usually gives the reader a path through the case rather than a single summary. The register of actions is the chronological event list. It can show filings, notices, hearings, orders, dispositions, and financial entries. The public calendar adds hearing date and courtroom data but does not show private identifiers, full party addresses, complaint documents, or full financial ledgers.

Useful terms include docket, register of actions, disposition, judgment, certified copy, and sealed record. A docket is the schedule or event list. A disposition is the result. A certified copy is a court-authenticated copy from court administration.
Public Access for Lyon County Court Records
Court-record access in Lyon County comes from both state data law and judicial-branch access rules. Minnesota Statutes Chapter 13 presumes government data are public unless a law classifies them otherwise. Court case access is controlled more directly by the Minnesota Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch.
Rule 4 defines case records that are not public, and Rule 8 controls remote access, inspection, copying, and bulk distribution. This is why MCRO can be useful yet incomplete. Some public records can be reviewed at courthouse terminals or through court administration even when they are not shown online.

Restricted Lyon County Court Records
Not every public court fact is available on the internet. MCRO excludes Child Protection and Juvenile Delinquency Felony 16 case types. Domestic Abuse Orders for Protection and Harassment Restraining Order cases are not displayed online because of federal VAWA restrictions. Public documents in civil commitment case types are not available through MCRO, and adoption records are generally restricted.
Pending criminal, traffic, and petty misdemeanor cases with no conviction are also limited in name searches. They may still be found by case number, citation number, attorney, or bar number. Party street addresses and comment fields are not displayed remotely, except criminal sentencing condition comments may appear.

Lyon County Court Records Requests
When MCRO does not provide enough information, the next channels are courthouse access and a copy request.
